Some of the Keys to Success

This week, we feature top tips for budding massage therapists. We interviewed one of our trainers who has performed in excess of 50,000 treatments and has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the body and its systems. In this article, we ask our trainer to give us some tips –

Q: You are booked out in private clinic for months in advance. What key factors would you put this down to?

A: The level of service that is provided to each client, not just treating the client as another job but instead connecting to the person, their needs and performing a treatment absolutely dedicated to them.

Q: When you bring a client into your treatment room, what is the first thing you do?

A: The first focus is relationship building, the initial contact sets the tone and environment for the whole treatment. The treatment is about the whole experience and includes the client trusting me.

Q: When a client gets onto the table, what do you make sure of?

A: I make sure they are comfortable, there is nothing worse than trying to relax when you don’t feel comfortable. I try to make sure the table, pillow, cover and temperature is tailored to exactly how they like it. This includes privacy and modesty.

Q: What is the most common feedback you get about your massage sessions?

A:  I find the approach to addressing pain or problem areas needs to be in tandem with the client. It is a dual responsibility of me applying the massage techniques that support restoring the body back to healthy function as well as the client changing the way they are doing the thing taking them out of healthy function. Only together can the body sustain better health.

Q: If you were to give students or budding therapists your five top tips for building a successful massage business, what would they be?

    A:

    1. Make your job about people and what you can do to make the experience for the client as good as possible
    2. Never stop learning
    3. Warm the body and specific area of pain thoroughly first
    4. Get the basics right first, these are far more effective than anything fancy
    5. Maintain your own self-care, fitness, health and do not take things personally

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

A: Massage has been a rewarding career. The fulfilment I have experienced working in a career I am passionate about and being able to work directly with people and their body, couldn’t imagine anything better.
