Often when we hear the words strength and fitness, the first thing that comes to mind is buff, toned biceps, or lean muscular legs capable of running for miles. How often though, do we think about our core?

The core muscles are a complex series of muscles that extend well beyond simply your abs and abdominal area. The main muscles that make up your core include your transverse abdominals, multifidus, diaphragm and pelvic floor, however there are additional deeper muscles as well.

Why is core strength and stability so important?

Whether you’re a massage therapist, a mother or simply someone who is interested in maintaining health and fitness and preventing injury, your core stability should be front and centre of your fitness routine. Almost every movement you do either originates in your core, or moves through it. Standing for long hours, heavy lifting, sweeping the floor or simply sitting for prolonged periods of time are all tasks that can be supported by having a firm, stable core.

Additionally, having core stability can prevent lower back pain – an often debilitating condition that far too many simply live with on a day-to-day basis

How can I work on my core strength?

A great way to start strengthening your core is to draw in your abdominal muscles (think of your belly button being drawn in towards your spine), hold for five seconds and then release. Once you’re familiar with this you can begin more complex core exercises that can work both the deeper muscles as well as the more superficial ones. The internet is no stranger to core exercises, and these days there are countless numbers of great apps offering core workouts – so give it a go and enjoy the day-to-day and lifelong benefits!
